In the mid 19th century, French prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is released after serving 19 years in the Bagne of Toulon, for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister's son. His paroled status halts him from living, but is soon is sheltered by a kind Bishop of Digne, who changes his life forever. Valjean breaks his parole and set off a new life, but Javert (Russell Crowe), the former Toulon prison guard vows to bring him back to prison.
